Barack
Obama
Like any career, success in politics is due to skill,
luck, and tenacity. Barack Obama is blessed with all three.
He is one of the most unlikely presidents in our history. He was
virtually unknown outside of his home state -- our home state at
BuzzFlash -- until he delivered a mesmerizing, energizing, hopeful
speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. A U.S. Senator
for just over two years, he announced his candidacy to lead America
as its CEO in February 2007.
But Obama knew that he was speaking about himself as much as our
nation when he repeatedly declared during his presidential campaign: "this
is our moment."
It was his moment and a nation's opportunity to take a giant leap
forward and lift its feet out of eight years of toxic national government.
Running a national campaign is like flying an airplane on one engine
and a half a wing. Obama, however, never lost his poise, his direction,
his credibility, or his sense of destiny: for himself and for America.
Barack Obama offered us not fear or gloom, but a sense of the evolving
possibility and transformation that is offered by a democracy in
which we are all equal participants. He gave us hope about what we
could achieve as a self-governed people creating our own future.
Obama is not perfect. He will disappoint us at times, but there
is no way to please more than 300 million people. Decisions have
to be made, and sometimes they will not break our way.
But Barack Hussein Obama is a brilliant man of words, someone who
has seen the United States through a special lens and loved it all
the more. He had the pluck and audacity to take on the most unlikely
of missions: being elected President of the United States against
all odds -- and the world will be the better for it.
Barack Obama, President of the United States, you are honored with
this week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
