L.F. Eason III
Whether he was fired or just retired in protest is
in dispute, but one thing is clear: L.F. Eason III of North Carolina
took a principled
position on behalf of social justice when he refused to lower a flag
in "honor" of Jesse Helms.
Helms passed away earlier this month. In "tribute" to Helms,
North Carolina Governor Mike Easley ordered flags in front of state
government buildings to be lowered.
L.F. Eason, a 31-year employee of the state, couldn't stomach honoring
a bigot and malicious man just because he was a U.S. Senator, so
he no longer has a job as a result. Eason worked for 29 years at
the Department of Agriculture in North Carolina.
According to USA
Today, he wouldn't have his staff comply with the
Governor's "honoring" of Helms. Eason rightfully accused
Helms of a "doctrine of negativity, hate, and prejudice."
You'd be hard put to argue with that assessment, and for that commitment
to basic decency, we honor L.F. Eason III as winner of this week's
BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
