Glenn Greenwald
A Constitutional lawyer turned Internet columnist
and book author,
Glenn Greenwald has been the lead critic on the so-called "revised" FISA
bill.
Greenwald, whom we have interviewed and corresponded with, is not
only a critical source of information on the Constitutionally flawed
and crime-sanctioning FISA bill that most recently passed the House
of Representatives, but also he conveys a passion and indignation
that moves readers to action. It is not too trite to say -- shortly
after July 4 -- that Greenwald has the Spirit of '76 within him as
he issues ongoing updates as to the state of the unnecessary and
craven Bush and Telecom Company "Get Out of Jail Free" legislation.
Not to mention, as Greenwald has reminded us in his columns on Salon.com,
the so-called "compromise" bill will also broaden government
spying on us. As he never stops pointing out, there is no need for
a "new" bill; we already have a FISA law. The only difference
now is that Bush and the Telecoms broke that law and now want to
be, in essence, pardoned. At the same time -- and this is the most
threatening part -- the new FISA law would give Bush more power to
intrude into our private lives with less oversight!
Greenwald has been highly critical of Obama's willingness to gloss
over the legislation, one can assume because he and his campaign
view it as a distraction from their strategy. But Obama is accountable
to uphold the Constitution, and as a Constitutional expert and upholder
of civil liberties, he knows it. Greenwald is correct to dress him
down for his expediency, and Obama should expect no less of us. We
would be disappointing him if we didn't call him to account.
For reminding us that our Constitutional responsibilities supersede
our political loyalties, Glenn Greenwald merits being named the winner
of this week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
