Russ Feingold

BuzzFlash reader Marilyn Lang of Eureka, California took the time to write a letter to the editor of The Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin, to nominate this week’s BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award Winner.

Since Marilyn went to all that trouble, we’ll let her correspondence eloquently speak for itself.

I have just nominated Sen. Russ Feingold for the BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award. My nomination statement is as follows:

"Sen. Feingold fights against the over-reaching Bush administration, Republicans and cowering Democrats to uphold his oath of office to protect our Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. He was the lone voice of opposition to the Patriot Act. Now he stands firm in fighting, almost single-handedly, against the faux compromise on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which allows immunity to the White House and the telecoms for their spying on U.S. citizens, which prevents us from ever knowing the full extent of the Bush administration's spying on innocent citizens, which expands powers for the executive branch and which weakens the Fourth Amendment.

"Sen. Feingold never fails to act with integrity. He towers over those Democrats who, in their fear of appearing weak, prove themselves weak by trading our civil liberties for a false sense of security. Sen. Feingold understands that you can protect civil liberties and national security simultaneously and that we have no security in the absence of civil liberties. He knows that our only security is in our allegiance to principle and to our Constitution.

For his dedicated public service, for his unwavering commitment to integrity, principle and to our Constitution, even when he must stand alone, Sen. Feingold is a profile in courage, a true leader and deserving of the Wings of Justice Award.

Wisconsinites are very lucky, indeed, to have such a shining example of leadership in their senator."
