Monica Lin Brown
War is hell. Yet, soldiers in combat zones do amazing things for
each other.
And they should be honored because they are serving in a war that
they didn't ask for.
Monica Lin Brown is one such person. Serving as an Army medic at
19 years of age, she will receive the Silver Star later this month
for her actions in Afghanistan in 2007 that saved the lives of
5 soldiers injured by a roadside bomb.
According to the Houston
Chronicle:
"After the explosion, which wounded five soldiers
in her unit, Brown ran through insurgent gunfire and used her body
to shield wounded comrades as mortars fell less than 100 yards
away, the military said."
Brown "will become the first woman in Afghanistan and only
the second female soldier since World War II to receive the Silver
Star, the nation's third-highest medal for valor."
As the Chronicle notes, "Pentagon policy prohibits women from
serving in front-line combat roles -- in the infantry, armor or
artillery, for example. But the nature of the wars in Afghanistan
and Iraq, with no real front lines, has seen women soldiers take
part in close-quarters combat more than previous conflicts."
Monica Lin Brown is one of those women, and her heroic efforts
merit her receipt of this week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
