Iowa Democratic Caucus Voters
From the beginning of his stolen presidency, George W.
Bush treated the American people in a paternalistic manner. He
was the "decider": war was not
our business because that was his "job." In his worldview, we became
largely irrelevant "children."
Many Americans, after hope after hope was dashed, became numb, which is the purpose
of authoritarianism; it is to make people feel helpless and defeated, and to
yield power to a select few.
But something stirred in Iowa last week. The winds of democracy swirled about
and the ranks of those who voted transparently -- literally with their bodies
-- swelled. In a determined, orderly fashion, Americans came out in the Midwest
winter cold to re-assert their faith in the great process that makes a democracy
a glory to behold.
And on the Democratic side, at least two-thirds of the votes went to candidates
who
talked about "we" and not "me." Iowans led Americans in affirming
that the people of this nation want a say in their government. Far from losing
faith in the ideals of the Constitution, they took committed steps to reclaim
it.
Our leaders should be a reflection of our people. That is how democracy works.
This week BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award goes to the Iowa Democratic Caucus
Voters for reminding us of that.
