Naomi Wolf
Naomi Wolf has taken up pen and paper and pulled the alarm on
how close America is to fascism. In her recently released book, "The
End of America: A Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot," Wolf
details 10 thresholds America has already crossed in an incremental
creep toward tyranny.
When BuzzFlash recently interviewed
Wolf,
we took note not just of the wake-up call in her book, but a tone
in her voice that revealed a sense of urgency in her concern that
our democracy is almost lost. This was not just a writing project
for Wolf; it is a mission to help keep America from traveling down
the road that Germany, Italy, and Spain followed in the last century.
Her thesis is that while many of us are aware of individual violations
of the Constitution and illegalities by the Bush Administration,
it is only when you connect the dots that you see that what they
are doing follows the pattern of moving a nation from democracy
to fascism.
Wolf is now traveling around the country, a modern day Paula Revere,
working to ignite an uprising on behalf of democracy.
The BuzzFlash reader who nominated Wolf noted that she is taking "proactive
measures to defeat the usurpers of democracy in the United States.
Naomi Wolf is articulate and accessible and doesn't hesitate to
describe the creeping fascism in the face of a complacent or --
in the case of the remaining 28% -- the complicit constituency
and our own Congress. She is a moral crusader in the best sense
of the phrase."
Recently, Wolf wrote a commentary in
which she recounted the pained Americans she meets who are at a
loss about how to confront the "Big Brother" government
that is taking more and more of our liberties away.
In that essay, she observed:
In Germany, according to historian Richard Evans,
in 1931-1932, if enough Germans of conscience had begun to say
No -- history
would have had an entirely different outcome.
If we go any further down this road the tears will be those of
conservatives as well as progressives. They will be American tears.
The time for weeping has to stop; the time for confronting must
begin.
Naomi Wolf is not just a noted author and social commentator, she
is an agitator for the Constitution and preservation of the ideals
for which America was founded. For that she deserves this week's
BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
