Participants in the Saffron Revolution
In October 2005, BuzzFlash honored Aung
San Sui Kyi with a BuzzFlash
Wings of Justice Award.
At that time, we noted, "Burma -- renamed Myanmar in 1989
by the military government -- does have Aung San Sui Kyi, who won
82% of the popular vote in 1990, but she has never been allowed
to hold office. Instead, since the election, she has been under
intermittent arrest, house arrest, surveillance, and is prohibited
from taking part in political activities. Because she chose not
to abandon her countrymen and women, exile wasn't an option. In
1991, she won the Nobel Peace Prize 'for her non-violent struggle
for democracy and human rights.'"
The military thugs who have been in power since conducting their
coup recently brutally suppressed what is being called the Saffron
Revolution, led by holy men and women who marched non-violently
for freedom. They were shot at, killed, and arrested. Many of the
monks have reportedly disappeared.
The participants in the "Saffron Revolution" know the
Bush Administration will not offer them anything but empty rhetoric.
They must know the Chinese government supports the rule of the
generals.
Yet they, as noted by the BuzzFlash reader who nominated them, "led
protests against the governing junta. Because they know that liberation
is not something that can be realized only through isolated individual
spiritual practice; it requires social and political action on
behalf of all people (and all beings) as well. Because they're
willing to risk their lives to achieve this goal."
The Saffron Revolution is a reminder to all of us that there are
men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line for
liberty, even in the face of de facto inaction from the governments
of the East and the West.
To the participants of the Saffron Revolution in Burma, we proudly
award our BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
