Mikey Weinstein

As was noted in the preface to our BuzzFlash interview with Mikey Weinstein, he knows of what he speaks: "Mikey comes from a family that has dedicated itself to the service of the United States. One indication of the family's commitment is its multi-generational association with the nation's military academies, in particular, the United States Air Force Academy. His father graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Mikey is a graduate of the Air Force Academy, as are his brother-in-law, eldest son, and daughter-in-law. His youngest son is currently a cadet at the Air Force Academy."

And what Weinstein speaks about are the dangers of the growing takeover of our military academies -- and the military in general -- by intolerant Evangelical Christians. We no longer, in many cases, are producing a military to protect America; we are nurturing an Army of God.

Weinstein heads the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and authored the book, "With God on Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military." He fearlessly champions the cause of keeping our military a diverse force where individuals can worship the God of their choice, or not be religious, if that is their choice. It is often a lonely battle.

As this week's Wings of Justice nominator noted: "With steely determination and with absolute resolve, Mikey Weinstein is fighting the ever-encroaching evangelical movement from dominating our military. These are the literal wing-nut fanatics who want to begin the rapture so they can meet their Jesus."

Mikey Weinstein merits this week's Wings of Justice Award for speaking out on behalf of an armed forces that represents all Americans, not just a small extremist faction.
