Mario Gallegos, Jr.
BuzzFlash has warned again and again that
the Republicans are not stopping their efforts to steal the 2008
election through a variety
of undemocratic methods, including the suppression of votes. Greg
Palast has also weighed in on this with a great deal of corroborating
evidence.
Nothing proves this theory more than the fact that the U.S. Attorneys
put into place largely to concoct flimsy charges of voter fraud
-- to smear minority voters and help pass new "Jim Crow" laws
in states -- are still in their positions.
Meanwhile, states with Republican legislatures are scrambling to
pass onerous voter registration and polling place "verification"
requirements designed to keeps tens of thousands of Democrats from
ever voting.
The Texas legislature recently tried to pass a "Jim
Crow" bill to keep minorities from voting. Their effort
didn't
succeed because of the valiant and courageous efforts of Democratic
State Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr.
According to the Washington
Post:
"Against his doctor's advice,
a stooped and feeble state Sen. Mario Gallegos Jr. (D) arrives
at the Texas Capitol each day, just to make sure his chamber
does not take up a bill that would require voters to produce
identification at the polls.
"And when the rigors of the job start to wear on Gallegos, whose
body is trying to reject a liver transplanted four months ago,
he retires to a hospital-style bed -- donated by a Republican
colleague -- in a room next to the Senate chamber.
"From there, he can be summoned at a moment's notice, should
his vote be needed to keep the bill from reaching the floor."
Because of the devotion of Mario Gallegos to democracy, the legislative
clock ran out on the dastardly Texas Republicans -- and their
attempt to join in the Karl Rove voter suppression pile-on failed.
Too bad Gallegos isn't leading the charge on Capitol
Hill in D.C. He has all the guts the Dems on the Hill lack.
Texas Senator Gallegos, you more than deserve this week's
BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
Now, go back to the hospital and get well. Boy, do we need you.
