Melanie Sloan
If you want inspiration for how one person can achieve
change, take a look at Melanie Sloan.
A former prosecutor for the government (Assistant United States
Attorney in the District of Columbia), she decided she wanted to
help clean up corruption in Washington, D.C. So on a wing and a
prayer, she founded a non-partisan organization called CREW, Citizens
for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
In just a few short years, it has grown into an influential advocacy
group for reform in government.
Sloan was discouraged for her first couple of years because of
the challenging climate in obtaining funding. But she tenaciously
stuck in there, and now she and her CREW staff have become a dynamic,
respected, and credible voice for ethics in D.C.
Let it be a lesson to all activists: if you hang in there long
enough, you will likely have a positive impact on our democracy.
Melanie Sloan has – because she didn’t give up – and
she is disciplined and focused.
Melanie Sloan, for taking on corruption in D.C., you merit this
week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
