Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team
This week, the BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award goes
to the Rutgers University Women's Basketball Team and their coach,
C. Vivian
Stringer. The BuzzFlash reader who nominated them explains better
than we can why they so deservedly merit the honor:
In the wake of their sports achievements this year -- including
the Big East title, an NCAA regional championship (Final Four),
and advancing to the NCAA national championship game in Cleveland
(where they lost to Tennessee) -- this team and their coach were
maliciously and insensitively maligned by syndicated radio host
Dom Imus and his "sidekick" Bernard McGuirk for cheap
laughs.
Specifically, the team members were referred to as "nappy-headed
ho's", a degrading insult for people of color and for women.
The response of the team and their coach has been nothing short
of magnificent. They have
conducted themselves with grace, dignity, and class throughout
this ordeal.
For this, I nominate Coach Vivian Stringer and
the Rutgers University women's basketball team for this week's
BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
