Max Cleland
In the nearly seven years BuzzFlash has been online,
perhaps nothing has been more painful than watching the Republicans
slime
former Senator Max Cleland during the 2002 election.
The Vietnam Vet lost three limbs in that long ago war, while his
opponent in Georgia got out of serving by claiming he had
a knee damaged while playing football. The repugnant GOP character
assassination machine even asserted that Cleland, who uses his
one remaining limb to move around in a wheelchair, wasn't
even a hero worthy of respect.
Of course by now, we know Cheney, Bush, and the other GOP warhawks
all avoided going to Vietnam.
Last week, Cleland finally slugged back, and we couldn't
have been filled with more joy. In response to one of Cheney's
unending efforts to scare Americans into continuing the disastrous
Iraq War, Cleland went
on CNN and blasted away:
"Where the hell were you in the Vietnam War? If you had gone
to Vietnam like the rest of us, maybe you would have learned something
about war. You can't keep troops on the ground forever. You gotta
have a mission. You gotta have a purpose.
"You can't keep sending 'em back and back and back with no mission
and no purpose. As a matter of fact, the real enemy is Al Qaeda,
it's Al Qaeda stupid, it's not in Iraq."
Democrats don't need to make up lies and Swiftboat the Busheviks.
They just need to come out swinging with the truth.
And for reminding us of that, Max Cleland is named the winner
of this week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award.
