Gannett Newspapers
BuzzFlash regularly trashes the mainstream media as a defender of
the status quo, particularly the Republican status quo.
But the day before the elections, the four major military papers
published editorials calling for Donald Rumsfeld to be terminated
as Secretary of Defense.
"Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership,
with the troops, with Congress and with the public at large," the
editorial concludes. "His strategy has failed, and his ability
to lead is compromised. This is not about the midterm elections.
Regardless of which party wins Nov. 7, the time has come, Mr. President,
to face the hard bruising truth: Donald Rumsfeld must go."
The military papers were reflecting what John Murtha has been voicing
for sometime: all but the most toady of the military brass think
Rumsfeld is destroying our armed forces.
It took guts for Gannett to take heat for running the simultaneous
editorials the day before the election. They said the timing was
due to Bush's assertion, just days before, that
Rumsfeld was going to stay in his position, no matter what.
Bush, of course, lied, yet again. But the Gannett military newspapers
told the truth.
For that, we present a rare Wings of Justice honor to a corporate
member of the mainstream media: Gannett newspapers.
They did our service men and women proud on November 6.
